A visit to Yosemite National Park is a bucket list item for travelers all over the world, but if you thought spending a day at the park would be incredible, we at Love Yosemite! can’t wait to show you how much more special it will be to get to stay inside the park’s borders. We can promise you will become obsessed with the opportunity to see more of the wildlife that inhabits the area, and because you are staying in our Love Yosemite! charming retreats, your visit will be enriched by this in-depth vacation experience as well as all the comforts of home. This ultimate guide to staying inside Yosemite vacation rentals will make you wonder how much you may have missed by not staying inside the other national parks you have traveled to over the years!

Less Travel, More Time to Play

The worst part of every vacation, in our humble opinion, is the amount of time spent in our cars driving from attraction to attraction, and although there will still be some drive time—the park is over 1100 square miles—you will still be much closer to each of the attractions that make it special. Also, you won’t have to deal with the hassle of the entry gate, waiting for people who should already know they have to pay to ask a lot of questions and take their time getting their wallets out. Below, we have listed a few of the attractions you will be closer to, just to give you an idea of what to expect!

Yosemite Falls

Yosemite Vacation Rentals - Falls

Standing over 2000 feet tall, Yosemite Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in the country. Best viewed in the spring when snowmelt creates a powerful spray of water tumbling over the granite cliffs, the flow generally ceases in July. You can hike to the top, but it will take experienced hikers at least eight hours to hike there and back. For those who want to skip the tough hike, the most popular trail to the fall is fully flat, paved, and accessible for all, and it only takes about 20 minutes to reach stunning waterfall views!

Half Dome

The technical term for Half Dome is a “quartz monzonite batholith,” but don’t worry, there won’t be a quiz, and we really don’t understand it either. What we do know is that Half Dome in Yosemite is another attraction you won’t have to drive far to see and that it is very much worth seeing. Famous for being the star of many of photographer Ansel Adam’s photos, it is also much loved by rock climbers, and whether you decide to climb it or not, it will still look amazing in the pictures you take. Half Dome is visible from the valley floor as well as Glacier Point Road.

Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias
Yosemite Summer Vacation - Giant Sequoias

Even if you aren’t a nature lover at heart, it will be impossible to remain unmoved at the ancient trees that reside in the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. One of the oldest and largest trees in the grove, the Grizzly Giant, estimated to be at least 2700 years old, and the Bachelor and Three Graces are a cluster of trees in front of which many photos have been taken.

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

It should be of no surprise that being eco-friendly is a goal that the world wishes everyone would try to achieve, and if you aren’t driving as much, you are doing just that. Climate change, altered fire regimes, and air pollution are three of the greatest threats to Yosemite National Park, and although we want the world to experience its beauty, we must also respect its needs. When you drive less, you reduce air pollution as well. The good news is that major studies reveal that the park’s conservation outlook is “good with some concerns,” with the concerns being the threats we just mentioned, plus overdevelopment and overcrowding, but isn’t it nice to know that you are doing your part in keeping Yosemite beautiful for many generations to come?

Equally important, at least for you and your family, you will spend less on gas while enjoying a much more immersive experience. This, of course, leaves you more money to spend on souvenirs, desserts with dinner, better wine, and maybe an extra day of relaxation and comfort when you choose to stay one more night in our Love Yosemite! vacation escapes located in the heart of Yosemite National Park.

Immerse Yourself

Can you picture it? Waking every morning in your California sanctuary, perhaps brewing a pot of coffee before heading out to your deck to sip, savor, and watch the park come alive around you. Maybe you will catch sight of doe and her fawn, stepping timidly out from the tree line in search of food or water. Or maybe you will just find yourself enchanted by the sounds of the wind rustling the leaves of the trees, of birds singing a merry tune as they bring food home to their hungry hatchlings, immersing yourself in an experience that will change your life forever more. Better yet, you will know that you have a day filled with Yosemite adventures in store for you, including the ones we have listed below.

Guided Horseback Tours

Yosemite Trails Horseback Adventures, although it isn’t based inside Yosemite, is located just outside the south gate, offers trail rides that meander through the park, including one that takes riders straight to Grizzly Giant. Traveling through the park in much the same way Teddy Roosevelt did over a century ago before expanding federal protection of Yosemite, will be an experience you will wish never had to end.

Whitewater Rafting

Yosemite Summer Vacation - White Water Rafting

Zephyr Whitewater Expeditions offers fantastic expeditions down the Merced River, a river that runs through Yosemite and provides class 3 and 4 whitewater. Choose between a half-day adventure that includes wetsuits and/or paddle jackets, a cold beverage at trip’s end, and a picture that will be taken at a strategic part of the journey, or an all-day trip that includes all of the above, plus a delicious lunch to be enjoyed riverside. Both adventures are only available April through July.

Hiking Adventures

The trails that traverse Yosemite will take up permanent residence in your heart, and because you have chosen to reside within the park during your stay, you will have more time to explore the ones you have dreamed about experiencing your entire life. The Mist Trail is one of the most popular hikes in Yosemite, offering stunning views of Vernal Falls and Half Dome while remaining a relatively easy walk.

Where the Wild Things Live

One of your favorite parts of staying within the borders of Yosemite Park may be having more opportunities to see the wildlife that inhabits the area. From bird watching to skunk spotting, every day may be an adventure in wildness that will never be forgotten. If you are lucky, you may be able to spot some of the more timid animals listed below, from a safe distance, of course!

American Black Bear

Yosemite Summer Vacation - Black Bears

Not all black bears are black, many can weigh as much as 500 pounds, and the American black bears are residents of Yosemite, residents that are best observed from a safe distance. It’s also important not to leave food in your car, as hungry and curious bears could try to get in!

Mountain Lion

Do you know what the mountain lion, cougar, and pumas have in common? Those are actually just different names for the same animal, and all live within the boundaries (and outside) of Yosemite National Park. They can jump 15 feet high and 40 feet in distance, but since they are solitary animals, the chances of running across one during your adventures in Yosemite are rare.

Bighorn Sheep

There is something magical about spotting a bighorn sheep climbing up a granite cliff, so be sure to keep an eye out and have a camera on hand. You will want pictures to prove that you were there, and these pics will win you the envy of all who see them.

Peaceful and Quiet

The towns that surround Yosemite National Park are charming and filled with life, but they are also where many of the tourists that make their way to the park will stay, adding a touch of chaos, a touch of confusion, and a whole bunch of noise to the surroundings. When you stay in the park, there are other people staying there as well, but nowhere near the numbers outside the park, and you will immediately feel (and hear) the difference. We’ve already shown you how your mornings can start, and by now you have an idea on how the daylight hours will be filled, but now it is time to talk about the most peaceful nights of your life. Start the evening out raising a toast to the setting of the California sun, watching the sky turn to fire before all the light turns to dark and the stars begin twinkling in harmony with the cool glow of the moon. Although not officially designated a Dark Sky park, the night skies of Yosemite are vast and velvety dark, and with the exception of the hooting of an owl, the mating call of frogs, and maybe the sounds of the wind in the trees, will be exceptionally quiet, peaceful, and soul satisfying.

The History of Cabins Reinvented

Cabins have been the primary source of residency in the park for over 100 years, and some of those original cabins still stand today, including the Hodgdon Homestead Cabin built in 1879, the McCauley Cabin built in 1889, and the Frog Creek Cabin built in 1934. Our cabins reflect the history and charm of those early sanctuaries while also offering the modern conveniences that just make life easier. Our fully equipped kitchens will provide modern stoves, refrigerators, and in most cases, dishwashers that make clean up after a meal easy. State of the art televisions in our living rooms may be Smart ones, allowing guests to binge-watch their favorite streaming series on a rare but wonderful rainy night. Laundry rooms or closets with stackable units, barbecue grills on decks that look out onto the Yosemite landscape, and a variety of other modern amenities you may find surprising in the midst of all this wilderness.

Amenities You Will Love

Rustic, cozy, and charming doesn’t mean there won’t be any luxury amenities; you deserve to be spoiled during your adventures in nature, and our properties offer many. Hot tubs bubbling on decks under the stars, game rooms with foosball tables, board games, even bookshelves stocked with books we hope you will read. When you choose to enjoy a Disney vacation, you probably already know all the rides you want to ride, and when you make a journey to Paris, you probably have a long list of landmarks that you have dreamed about visiting your entire life. But for most people, when it comes to Yosemite, all they really know is that it is a National Park in California famed for its natural beauty. Today, we at Love Yosemite! want to share our love of the area with this ultimate first-time visitor guide to Yosemite, offering a step by step, place by place map of everything that makes the park special and that should not be missed!

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

Before we delve into the adventures you will have, we would like to take a few minutes to discuss when the best time of year to visit would be. Is it the winter months when snow and ice turn the park into a magical winter wonderland? The falls may freeze, including the park’s namesake falls, Yosemite Falls, creating frazil ice, which is a stunning collection of ice crystals that will look like something out of a Disney movie.

Could it be the spring months, when the wildlife of Yosemite start appearing more frequently, often with babies in tow, and the waters of Yosemite Falls take on majestic proportions due to the snowmelt? Or what about summer, when families from all over the world flock to our piece of paradise, hiking, rock climbing, or fishing in the numerous rivers and lakes that are in the area? Maybe, just maybe, it is the fall season that will capture your heart, the trees turning fiery colors and the cool weather making a hike through the park an easy and comfortable trek? The answer is yes to all of the above, because Yosemite National Park is open every day of the year, and each new season brings more magic to view.

Shouldn’t Miss Attractions

Now that you have chosen a time to visit, let’s explore the attractions offered at the park, the ones that you shouldn’t miss if you want a full and successful vacation experience. There is so much to see and do during a Yosemite visit that we can’t cover it all in one page, but we have added the highlights to the list below.

The Waterfalls of Yosemite

yosemite watertfalls

The two waterfalls you will hear about the most are Yosemite Falls, which are the tallest falls in the nation, and Horsetail Falls, which offers an unusual natural occurrence in which the falls appear to turn to molten lava tumbling over the rocks at sunset in February. Both are definitely sights to behold and should not be missed, but don’t forget that there are over 25 waterfalls in Yosemite, all waiting to be exclaimed over, perhaps while using them as a backdrop to your family photos. Snow Creek Falls, the second tallest falls, features a series of cascades that tumble over 2000 feet from top to bottom. In comparison, the smallest waterfall of Yosemite, Quaking Aspen Falls, climbs just 25 feet high, but has multiple strands that create a truly magical effect, in spite of its miniscule size.

Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias

Yosemite is known for being home to several record breakers, not just the tallest falls, and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is where one of the largest living things resides, the not so humble sequoia tree. Yosemite’s Mariposa Grove is home to 500 massive giants, trees that have stood in the same spot for over 3000 years. The most famous tree in the groves, the Grizzly Giant, is reputed to be over 2700 years old, a number that truly boggles the mind. This magnificent sequoia was just a seed or sapling when the rise of Mesopotamia was happening, when the pyramids were being built, and papyrus was still hundreds of years away from being used. The grove is filled with fascinating trees, many with names and “reputations,” and is destined to live on in your photos and stories for years to come.

Glacier Point

When you drive into Yosemite for the first time, one of the most difficult parts of the drive will be keeping your eyes on the road and off the stunning beauty of the landscape that surrounds you. For safety’s sake, we highly recommend visiting Glacier Point, the park’s most popular viewing spot, offering panoramic views of some of the park’s greatest attractions, including Half Dome and Yosemite Falls. Perched 7200+ feet above the countryside, visitors can see for miles, and the pictures taken at this photographic hot spot will be the ones that will make your friends, family, and neighbors jealous that they weren’t able to join in on your adventures.

Off the Beaten Path in Yosemite

Not everyone likes to follow the crowds, and if you are one that turns away from the popular and towards the unique, the places that generally only the locals know, this next section will take you to your new happy spot.

Wawona Swimming Hole/Swinging Bridge

In the days before air conditioning, swimming holes were the best way to keep cool during the hottest days of the year, and even as our Wawona retreats will provide that modern convenience, the Wawona Swimming Hole still provides summer refreshment. Wawona is a small community located within the borders of Yosemite National Park, serving as the spot where several rivers meet, including the Merced River, and the swimming hole offers clear waters that are cold and wonderful. Whether you are taking a break from your hike through the area or make your way to the swimming hole specifically to frolic in the river, be sure to explore the old fashioned thrill of a walk across the Swinging Bridge. Not to be confused with the one in Yosemite Valley, this swinging bridge actually swings as you walk across it, adding an extra dose of excitement to your summer adventures. Taking Chilnualna Falls Road is the best way to get to this idyllic spot.

Taft Point

Glacier Point may be the most popular viewing spot in Yosemite, but the lesser traveled Taft Point, named after President Taft, will give you better views and less company. For those afraid of heights, this may not be the scenic viewing spot you want to explore, as there are no stone walls partially blocking the views and the thin metal rails that corral the first overlook offer just a suggestion of comfort. As you make your way to the edge, be sure to step around the fissures, massive gaps in the granite that drop straight down, an uncomfortable and perhaps catastrophic fall if you aren’t careful.

It’s the top overlook that you will want to see, if you dare, as it dangles 7500 feet over the countryside, and yes, there is no guardrail. The trail leading you to this daredevil’s delight is actually a moderate one, well-marked and easily followed, crossing creeks and leading hikers into the lush depths of the wooded areas of Yosemite. Your reward for facing your fears and completing the hike is, of course, those life-changing views.

Road Trip to Coulterville

Located just 60 miles away from your Bass Lake escape, the town of Coulterville offers a step back in time, featuring a downtown area that could have jumped from the pages of a Western novel. Many of its buildings date back to Gold Rush times, and its annual Coyote Fest pays homage to small towns everywhere as well as serving as a reminder that you truly are in the west. Offering artisan and food vendors, live music, a kids’ show, a howling contest, and a chili cookoff as well as a beer and wine garden, if you are visiting Yosemite at the end of September, we suggest adding a visit to Coulterville for this fun festival to your itinerary.

A Taste of Yosemite

dining table

The best vacations often include the best meals, devoured at restaurants that aren’t offered in our hometowns, and your California escape to Yosemite is destined to top your list of best meal experiences. Below we have listed just a few of our favorites as there just isn’t enough time to list them all!

The Ahwahnee Dining Room, 1 Ahwahnee Drive in Tuolumne Meadows

Located just 39 miles north of Bass Lake, the town of Ahwahnee is famous for being used for filming some of the interior scenes of the Stephen King movie, The Shining, but also for its iconic restaurant, the Ahwahnee Dining Room. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a space offering a crossbeam ceiling and cathedral windows, the menu offers a tasty selection of American delights. A buffet breakfast ensures no one will go hungry during their Yosemite adventures, and dinner is also buffet style, including a prime rib carving station.

The Mountain Room, Yosemite Lodge Drive in Yosemite Valley

If you haven’t gotten your fill of views of Yosemite Falls, but are also fighting a powerful hunger, dinner in the Mountain Room will solve both problems. Perfectly cooked steak is on the menu at this wonderful restaurant, and views of Yosemite Falls will help take the deliciousness of your steak to the next level. Also offering seafood, pasta dishes, and a full bar, we can promise that even the pickiest of diners will find something they love at the Mountain Room.

The Elderberry House, 48688 Victoria Lane in Oakhurst

The Elderberry House blends magic and wonder with a prixe-fixe menu of French California favorites. A generous patio with twinkle lights and white tablecloth tables offers a serene vibe to your choice of a three-course meal or five-course meal that offers a wine pairing for an additional cost. The Cellar offers a bar bites menu for those who try to avoid fancy foods, but if you are looking for a special occasion meal during your Yosemite journey, a visit to the Elderberry House will give you an experience that will be the topic of your vacation stories for years to come, no matter how long you visit.

Special Events

The towns that surround Yosemite National Park are small but charming ones, and there are more than a few special events that will make your stay all that much more fun and exciting. We have listed a few of our favorite events below.

14th Annual Bass Lake Yosemite Triathlon, May 31

The beauty of Yosemite may help ease the pain of competing in a triathlon, or at least that is what it seems like to us when we see the participants every year. For those who don’t know, a triathlon is made up of three race types in one—swimming, biking, and then running to the finish line—and if this sounds like a lot, wait until you hear the numbers! The standard Olympic triathlon is 1500 meters swimming, 40K biking, and 10K running, and the Bass Lake Yosemite Triathlon offers much more.

as well as a sprint (400M, 20K, 5K), an Aqua/Bike version, and a Duathlon which changes up things a bit, featuring a 5K run, 20K bike, and another 5K run. This triathlon has been a tradition since the 80s, and as we stated earlier, the stunning beauty of the surroundings, including the views of Bass Lake from inside and out, will distract you from the fact that you are swimming, biking, and running really far!

cycling race

Bass Lake 4th of July Flip Flops and Fireworks

You can’t get more all-American than a vacation in Yosemite, making an Independence Day celebration here something that is almost pre-ordained. The Bass Lake 4th of July Flip Flops and Fireworks festival has been an annual event that brings visitors joy for more years than we can count, offering live music, delicious barbecue, and of course, fabulous fireworks. Also offering photo booths that will provide a more tangible souvenir of the good times you had during your 4th of July festivities, coming home to your Love Yosemite! vacation escape after this patriotic celebration will make the birthday celebration shine brighter.

Yosemite Firefall, February of 2025 Trip Guide

Although it isn’t new, Yosemite Firefall is a natural occurrence that has drawn visitors to the park for over 150 years, and if your visit takes place between February 8th and February 23rd in Yosemite, you may get the opportunity to witness it for yourself. What is the Yosemite Firefall? It is a natural phenomenon that makes Horsetail Falls at Yosemite National Park appear to be on fire, even resembling a stream of molten lava pouring over the cliffs. The sight of Yosemite Firefall will take your breath away, even knowing the secret behind it, which is as simple as the sunset striking the falls at just the right angle, an occurrence that only happens for about 15 minutes every February. The event is so popular, reservations must be made to visit Yosemite during the time period it is expected to take place.

Yosemite Attractions

Famous for its giant sequoia trees, for its stunning views, and natural landscape, guests have been flocking to its entrances for longer than it has been a park. The third National Park created (Yellowstone and Sequoia National Parks were 1st and 2nd respectively), it was officially designated a National Park by an act of Congress on October 1, 1890. Millions of people visit every year, but for most travelers, if you ask them what there is to see in Yosemite, they may not have a ready answer. We have listed a few of our favorite attractions below.

Yosemite Falls

The largest waterfall in the country, Yosemite Falls, is also the 6th largest in the world with its waters tumbling over cliffs that stand 2424 feet high. The best views of the falls take place in late spring when snowmelts increase the volume of the waters creating a spectacular display that has graced the backdrop of family photos for as long as there have been family photos. One of Yosemite’s oldest trails, the Yosemite Falls Trail will take hikers to the top, where the views are best, or you can take the 1-mile loop trail that leads to the base, which is accessible by wheelchair.

Tuolumne Meadows

The beautiful Tuolumne Meadows offer trails that lead alongside the even more Tuolumne River and can be the perfect spot for a picnic in the wild. Naturalists love the variety of plants and trees that make this area lush and verdant, and the trails that lead to the meadows can only be accessed by Tioga Road. Although Yosemite National Park is open 365 days out of the year, Tioga Road does close from December through May, sometimes June, so take that into account if the meadows are something you think you want to see when planning your vacation.

El Capitan

Rock climbing is a popular Yosemite activity, with most climbers making their way to the El Capitan rock formation, the tallest exposed wall of granite in the world, which stands about 3000 feet tall. Originally considered unclimbable, it was first conquered in 1957, taking 45 days over the course of a year. Today, it is the most popular climbing route, especially the route nicknamed the Nose. Only one person has ever completed the climb without ropes, and if you want to take a peek at his accomplishment, the movie Free Solo documents the climber’s experiences.

New at the Lake

The small towns that surround Yosemite haven’t changed much through the years, so when something new happens, whether it be a farmers market or a new restaurant, it is the talk of the town. Below, we have listed a few new things that we are all very excited about.

Sunset Market at Miller’s Landing

Summers in Bass Lake are probably our favorite time of the year, and in the summer of 2025 the new Sunset Market will be giving us more reasons to love the season. Taking place on the third Thursday at Miller’s Landing, visitors can expect to find gifts and goods crafted in the area, enjoy wine tastings, as well as purchase local produce, fresh flowers, and fresh baked breads, and homemade jams. The market will offer a fun way to stock the pantry of your Love Yosemite! California sanctuary, and the live music played during the market will have you dancing through the aisles. The first market will take place on May 18 starting at 4 and ending at 8.

produce at market

Chipotle, 40009 CA-49 in Oakhurst

If you know, you know. The taste of Chipotle is an addiction that you won’t have to miss during your Yosemite vacation, as a brand new Chipotle restaurant has opened right here in Oakhurst. We don’t often extoll the virtues of chain restaurants, but this wonderful one has held our hearts in its hand since our first taste of their fresh-made guacamole and will be a wonderful addition to your culinary explorations of the Yosemite area.

Frame-Worthy Photos

We keep mentioning the stunning landscape of Yosemite—it is probably the number one draw for the travelers who come in from all over the country—but before you take out your camera phone in a woeful attempt to capture the majesty you are seeing, why not consider taking a photography class at Yosemite? Ansel Adams was a photographer from San Francisco who grew famous from the photographs he took of Yosemite, and the Ansel Adams Gallery, located at 9031 Village Drive in Yosemite Valley (less than 50 miles away from Bass Lake) offers a class they call “In the Footsteps of Ansel Adams” on Mondays and Thursdays from November 26, 2024 through January 28, 2025.

Starting at 12:30 and lasting for four hours, this photographic tour of Yosemite Valley will help you take the pictures you can print, frame, and hang on your walls. The gallery has been offering a variety of photography classes over the years, so if you miss this one, the link we have attached below will keep you updated on all the classes they offer throughout the year, allowing you to time your getaway to match up with the class you love best.
