Sierra Vista Scenic Byway

One hundred miles of winding mountain road through the Sierra Nevada, where Ansel Adams found his light and you'll find yours.

The Byway

100 Miles of Mountain Magic

The natural beauty of the Yosemite landscape has awed travelers for centuries and is a main reason Yosemite National Park was created to preserve and protect the landscape and the wildlife that call this area home. The world famous photographer, Ansel Adams, introduced the world to Yosemite through his photographs, and although the pictures you take may not come as close to perfection as his did, the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway will have you itching to try. This guide to the 100-mile stretch of road that takes you through the most stunning sections of Yosemite will help you prepare for an adventure that will take your breath away.

Take It Easy

Slow Your Pace

The curvy mountain roads are enough to make you feel like taking it slow anyway, but it is the views that will ensure you slow down even more. Starting your journey at North Fork, which just so happens to be the exact geographic center of the state of California, you're going to drive up, up, and away; the starting point lies at 2,600 feet above sea level, and you are going to end at just over 7,308 feet up. In between, you will discover rock formations that will amaze, forests of giant sequoias, and a quaint general store with charming people who stop in and then wow them with juicy burgers and sweet, delicious pies. So be sure to bring your appetite.

Must-See Stops

Stop Here

As you drive along the road, the views will never cease to amaze, but there will be some stopping points that demand you pull in, take out your camera, and just point the lens in any direction, starting with the Mile High Vista. Located just off Forest Highway 81, panoramic views of over 15 mountain peaks will take your breath away, and if you look down, the Mammoth Pool Reservoir will temporarily rob you of the ability to make words. And when you get back in the car, continuing your journey past Jesse Ross Cabin, Redinger Overlook, Jackass Meadows, and so many more beautiful spots that will demand you stop and stare, you may find that it will take you the entire day to drive 100 miles, and that's ok. Don't forget to stop at Jone's Store, filling up on juicy hamburgers and ending your meal with a sweet piece of pie.
