November in the Sierras
November in the Sierras
November can be an underrated time to visit Yosemite. The summer crowds are gone, golden oaks and maples light up the Valley floor, and on a cold morning you might see the first dusting of snow on Half Dome. If you're planning a late fall getaway, here's what to know before you go.
Fewer Crowds, Easier Entry
The park says no vehicle reservation will be needed for the rest of 2026, so you can just drive in. Standard entrance fees still apply, and the park recommends buying your pass online through Recreation.gov ahead of time to skip the line at the gate. With fewer visitors, parking at popular spots like Yosemite Falls and Tunnel View is much easier than in summer.
What's Open (and What Closes)
- Yosemite Valley and Wawona are open to cars all year, so El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall and the Valley loop are all on the table.
- Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road usually close for the season sometime in November, once snow arrives. If Glacier Point is on your list, go early in the month and check conditions the morning you head out.
- Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is still open. A free shuttle runs from the Welcome Plaza near the South Entrance, typically through November. Once it stops, you can walk the Washburn Trail (about two miles each way) to see the big trees.
- Waterfalls are usually at their lowest in fall. After a good storm, though, they can come roaring back.
Pack for Every Season
November days can be crisp and sunny, but nights often drop below freezing. Bring layers, a warm jacket and good footwear. Most importantly, carry tire chains. They're often required on park roads once storms roll in, and you must have them in your vehicle when restrictions are posted, whatever you're driving.
Make Bass Lake Your Home Base
Just outside Yosemite's South Entrance, Bass Lake is quiet, scenic and an easy drive from the Mariposa Grove and Wawona. After a day in the park, there's nothing better than coming back to a cozy cabin by the water. Late fall is also a lovely time to be on the lake itself, with fall color along the shoreline, peaceful morning walks and evenings by the fireplace.
If you're visiting over Thanksgiving, Bass Lake has some great holiday traditions:
- Thanksgiving Weekend Art & Craft Fair at The Pines Resort, November 27–29, a great place to start your holiday shopping.
- 35th Annual Bass Lake Christmas Tree Lighting & Holiday Parade of Lights, Saturday, November 28, 5:30–7:30 PM at The Pines Village. It's free and a favorite with families.
A Thanksgiving Tip
Holiday weekend is one of the busiest times of the fall season, and the best cabins with fireplaces, hot tubs and lake views book up first. Plan ahead so your group has room to cook, gather and relax together.
